Hello Powder lovers! The season has started and the holidays are almost here, which means traveling to Tahoe is a guarantee for most family's and friend's. With this in mind, I have provided iPhone users with some Helpful Hints to make traveling to Tahoe a little easier and more enjoyable.
Whether you’re driving 20 miles or 2000, being able to find gas, grab a bite to eat, keep up with the news, check the map for your location and most importantly, weather and resort conditions are all essential to a good journey on the road. With the right iPhone apps, you can avoid sticky situations in the snow like running out of gas or getting lost miles from home.
For finding things:
1. MapsBuddy:MapsBuddy is a popular application that makes searching on Google Mapseasy. MapsBuddy provides quick shortcuts for finding gas stations, restaurants, post offices, and everything you’ll need for the road.
2.SimulTravel GPS: If you’re looking for a hotel for the night, a great app is SimulTravel GPS – it locates hotels near your location in a snap and provides prices and detailed information on each hotel.
3. Yelp: Yelp, the popular reviews-based social network, is also an iPhone app. It will detect your current location and give you reviews of hotels, restaurants, and even gas stations nearby.
4. Where To?: Another great app for finding things, Where To helps you find places of interest (ski resorts). The “Surprise Me!” feature will help you pick where you want to stop if the group or family can’t decide.
For information on the road:
5 .RoadTrip: This app is known to be one of the most comprehensive for road travel. Road Trip allows you to track mileage, fuel prices, and graph out trip expenses.
6. WifiTrack: If you’re on the road, there are things that you’ll need to do that require Internet on your computer. But why pay for Wi-Fi when it can be found for free? WifiTrack helps determine the strength of WiFi hot spots and helps you find the ones that don’t require you to pay.
Weather and snow reports:
7. WorldView Live: You can view images from 10,000 webcams around the world on your phone, including what your favorite resort (cough, cough, Sierra) looks like?
8. The Weather Channel: Although the iPhone has a standard weather app, The Weather Channel provides you with weather conditions for your exact location, as well as radar maps and long-term forecasts.
9. Ski Report: This is a killer app that organizes resorts by those closest to you and shows at a glance base depths and recent snowfalls. Also displays on-site ski reports!
10. The Snow Report from the North Face: This app is one of my favorite because of it's detailed maps, and is said to be the best designed, most modern-looking of all the snow applications.
Games & Misc:
11. Road Trip Fun: Dozens of classic road games in one = endless entertainment in your palm.
12. Ski Jump Light: A hoot of a game that allows you to bust tricks without the chance of injury.
13. Flashlight: Lost items in the car, suitcase or purse? The flashlight has multiple colors to choose from that light up your entire screen to help you find any belonging lost in the dark.
I hope this list finds use for you and your traveling companions. You can find and purchase any of these apps at http://www.apple.com/iphone/apps-for-iphone/.
Happy Holidays and safe travels!
